Trapper Creek was fun, now we looked forward to a few days off from touring just to get reorganized. Five nights in Anchorage would provide that as well as a trip to the movies and popcorn. First though it was off to a medical clinic where Ted could get legal drugs to begin what turned out to be a slow recovery. We were back in the city, the largest in Alaska. There are Walmarts, a Best Buy, supermarkets, and a GM car dealer where we all had our oil changed. We checked out some of the shops, visited the Alask Public Lands Information Center where a movie and displays are very interesting and then watched people fishing for salmon at Ship Creek. Silver salmon were running and at times we could see hundreds circling around as they pushed upstream to spawn. The rules required them to be hooked in the mouth only, any fish snagged otherwise had to be thrown back and a stiff penalty seemed to keep everyone honest. There were also reports of fish and game wardens hiding in the bushes or posing as fishermen, just thinking it was true worked.
The big tour was to Whittier and a twenty six glacier boat trip. Ted stayed home sick, Lois provided him comfort, Sarah and Joe took the train, and the rest of us drove. The road follows the train or just the opposite, so driving let us stop, take pictures, and enjoy the views. There would also be time for dinner at the Double Muskie, locally touted as one of the best restaurants and right on our way home. The boat trip was very enjoyable even with the cloudy cold weather. I especially enjoyed seeing the cutest animals alive, sea otters, also seals, but no whales, and did I mention glaciers. There were valley glaciers, hanging glaciers, tidewater glaciers all icy and cold. The boat was a large fast comfortable catamaran, allowing us to cover a large area that with clear skies and bright sunlight would have sparkled even more.
I must say our weather through Anchorage has been almost perfect but the magic weatherman has left on vacation leaving cold drizzle and rain on the schedule. Superman Returns was the chosen flick with only a few following the popcorn rules and illness returns the result for Ted. Anchorage RV Park was very nice, we had roomy back in sites and they offered wifi which was free but only until they have their pay system installed. On to Seward and maybe another boat trip this time for wildlife not glaciers.
