We all liked Homer. There is a familiar seashore feel to the Homer Spit, that part of the town shaped like a long finger into the sea. Fun shops, restaurants, bars, and sports fishing galore. The smell of the sea and the mountain views are, well as Sarah would say, fabulous. Most importantly to all of us, the sun was shining and the days were warm. The town is very friendly to the RV community with camping and other services readily available. A few of us toyed with the idea of going halibut fishing but the choppy seas and the considerable cost steered us to a market with fresh halibut filets, dinner was planned. There is a limit of two halibut per person and all the boats came back with happy customers even the green ones were happy.

We stayed at Ocean View RV Park which was a little tight but comfortable. Took a ride up skyline drive for a nice view of the town and visited the Carl E. Wynn nature center. Mostly we enjoyed exploring the Homer Spit, certainly the ladies relished the shopping. Mike, Sandy, Kath, and I visited a small town just west of Anchor Point. There is a strong Russian influence in some areas of Alaska and here in Nikolaevsk it is alive and well. Kathleen took pictures of the onion topped Russian Orthodox church and then we had the pleasure of meeting Nina and experiencing her Russian Cafe, in fact Nina was the experience. She coerced us into trying borsht, the special dish of the day, and even dessert. She sold us her own delicious, and high priced, tea mixture all the while exclaiming how all the money goes to feed hungry children in Russia. There is a sign posted stating No Pictures Without Permission - we bought lunch so she let us record the event.
