Tok
Suddenly it feels like we are heading back home. Going over some of the Alaska highway previously traveled and heading south raises that thought but we still have a long way to go and much to see. Two one night stands Tok and Destruction Bay on the way to Haines Alaska. The last several miles to Tok was gravel, mud and a little bumpy. We had driven through Tok on the way north but this time we stayed the night at Tok RV Village. No sight seeing, Mike washed his rig, Kath washed the trailer windows, and we all grilled some dinner.
Destruction Bay
Back into Canada, the Yukon, kilometers not miles, loonies and toonies. Reasonably good roads, sunshine but chilly in the wind. Destruction Bay Lodge had been reserved including their "famous" barbeque so dinner was planned. Joe and Sarah did not make this stop. They decided to take the ferry from Haines to Prince Rupert so they wanted more time in Haines before they left our caravan, we would see them there.
We took sites with electric and water and helped each other wash our rigs. Sandy and Lois shopped a little, shopping a lot isn't really possible here but admiring the wooden bowls by Dubie was a treat. Kathleen joined a group learning to whittle. Dubie was demonstrating the art of making a walking stick from diamond willow, a new obsession was born. Loren with his brother helping provided a great barbeque, good food, plenty to eat and for $18.95 a pretty good deal. Loren even provided after dinner entertainment keeping the party spirit alive.
"Dubie does bowls that's all he does." He also graciously spent some time showing us his shop, his burls, and explaining the process. His bowls were beautiful and just like snowflakes, everyone is different. Across the street from huge Kluane Lake, picturesque and remote, don't miss Destruction Bay and don't miss Dubie, it was a friendly, fun, and interesting stop.
